I’ve had a passion for jewellery as far back as I can remember. My Mum had a small hinged box full of tiny loose gemstones of all colours and sizes that I obsessed over and my Auntie has always had a wonderful collection of gemstones in an array of colours and sizes set in all sorts of fantastic jewels.
Always so fascinated with the way they played with the light and how a treasured piece of jewellery becomes almost a special friend, I naturally went into this industry with an open heart.
After four years of studying Goldsmithing and Jewellery at Kent Institute of Art & Design (now UCA) and under the watchful eye of the wonderful Brian Hill, I learned the traditional art of gouache painting. (There was no Computer Aided Design in the 1990’s!) while working weekends at a local jewellers where I learned the invaluable foundations of bench repair skills and the processes involved in assembling beautiful designer pieces.
My studies have never stopped. I was lucky enough to go straight into the field I love as the sole in-house jewellery designer at Parkhouse, a prestigious family owned jewellers in Southampton where I gained further qualifications by completing both NAJ’s Jet 1, 2 & Gemstone Diplomas. In my 7 years in this role I learned so much about how bespoke jewellery can touch peoples lives and gained many loyal repeat customers.
After Parkhouse I spent six years as a Pawnbroker, I passed the NAJ’s Certificate of Appraisal Theory, and became an Associate Member of The National Association of Jewellers and went on to pass The Gemmalogical Association of Great Britain’s Practical Diamond Grading Certificate, putting me on course to become a future Registered Valuer.
Since then I have worked with various jewellers, building my bench skills and repair knowledge from supervising service departments to taking on a variety of roles up to store manager. I have never stopped designing so now I have come full circle and I am designing my own collections as well as working directly with clients on bespoke pieces and remodelling.
My design process involves the dying art of fully hand-painted renders along with hand-drawn designs which I feel gives my designs an incredibly personal touch. Of course I can also utilise the latest techniques and technology as I have built a supply chain of highly skilled goldsmiths to work with to bring your special pieces to life.
Here is a sample of some of my personal work
Each piece of Sally Fry Jewellery is hand-finished in solid Ethical gold.
This means simply, that the metal is 100% Recycled, refined back to its purist form and re-alloyed to stringent specifications to be Hallmarked as Fine Jewellery at the London Assay Office.
Sally is also a Registered Fairtrade Goldsmith, allowing collection pieces to be available to order in Fairtrade precious metals.
Metal mining is dangerous which is why Sally chose to use Ethical metals, more details of the processes involved and the impact caused to our environment can be found here and further information about metal recycling can be read here.
